Symptoms & Conditions

A Closer Look: Female Health

Fibroids

While the ultimate cause is unknown, there are several hypotheses as to why women have fibroids:

PMS

Approximately 85% of women of child bearing age suffer from PMS at some point during their lives. PMS is considered a collection of symptoms that occurs cyclically around the beginning of menstruation. The most common symptoms are:

Because these symptoms occur at one point in the month, they are very likely to be related to imbalances in sex hormones. In our clinical practice, we've found that estrogen and progesterone must be in the correct ratio at all times during a woman's cycle. Some women have high levels of estrogen and normal levels of progesterone, while other women have normal levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone. The only way to know is through accurate testing.

Hot Flashes and/or Night Sweats

Usually these are caused by a low level of circulating estrogen but can also be remedied by giving progesterone, improving a sluggish thyroid or changing one's diet.

Hot Flashes may be a sign of:

This is why hormone evaluation through lab work is essential. Both the absolute values and the important ratios are assessed.

Low Libido or Erectile Dysfunction

Treating these conditions can be very complex and finding the cause can be difficult. Low levels of testosterone are not necessarily the cause, and rather an imbalance of hormones in general plays a more important role. Many factors can contribute to low libido and erectile dysfunction:

Weight Gain

Results from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 32.7 percent of U.S. adults 20 years and older are overweight, 34.3 percent are obese and 5.9 percent are extremely obese. The number of people who are obese has doubled since 1980. We have to assume that lifestyle and stress play a huge role in these findings. Many people find it hared to lose weight they have gained which becomes even harder as we age.

Disruptions in several different pathways can lead to difficulty losing weight:

Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is a common symptom of menopausal and premenopausal women. Symptoms often include pain during intercourse, itching, burning, and a feeling of pressure. Again, hormone imbalance is usually responsible, although side effects from medications and some autoimmune diseases can cause this symptom as well.

Bone Health

Women lose 75% of their bone mass within the first 3 years after menopause according to some statistics. There are several tests that measure bone density like the DEXA scan and urine metabolite testing. Keeping healthy bones will prevent fractures that could prevent mobility later in life and increase the rate of aging.
